Laurel Branch Frieze Limestone Mantel

A wide, low mantel of pale limestone with a flat shelf and almost no moulding. Its whole decoration is one shallow carving on the frieze: a slim upright cross at the centre with leafed branches trailing away to either side, cut so lightly that it catches only in raking light. The jambs are flat pilasters that step out at the foot, and the opening is lined in herringbone brick above a stone hearth. Fine mineral veining runs through the stone. It suits living rooms, chapels, primary suites and calm interiors that want ornament kept low.
